A very big thank you to the Basil Houghton Memorial Trust for funding Arty Party’s Celebrate Me! event 2012.
The event was a fun filled night of Arty Party magic. This was a great evening for our Members and their friends to shout out loud and celebrate the wonderful things they did in 2012.
Held at Castle Farm Community Centre, the event, attended by around sixty Arty Party Members, was full of sparkle. Arty Party Members and friends were invited to get in touch about something they were proud to have achieved in 2012.
Leading up to the event, we held two Celebrate Me! workshops at a Telford day centre, attended by twenty learning disabled adults, to encourage people to think about their achievements during 2012.
Thirty-six people told us about the special things they did. Achievements included gaining independence by learning to use the bus, learning to knit, starring in a film and travelling to Moscow where it was shown, taking part in an aerobatic stunt flight to raise money for charity, and overcoming fear to learn to swim.
All Achievers were presented with an Arty Party Celebrate Me! Certificate.
We asked Fiona Williams, from Taking Part, to choose seven achievements which deserved a medal. Fiona found it hard to choose and we are very grateful for her help. The seven winners were Basil Capp, Sam Rogers, Robert Checkley, Cherylanne Maddy, Mervyn Bradley, Rebecca Smith and Mandy Freeman. They were each presented with an engraved Arty Party Gold Star medal.
Later, there was music and dancing, with DJ David Rickard assisted by Arty Party Member Jason.
Arty Party’s Performance and Media group interviewed people at the event. You can listen to the interviews on our blog: http://artypartyblog.com. As you will see when you visit our Gallery, we took lots of photographs too (thanks to Mitch Morgan for this).
Note to sponsors: this event was such a success that the Arty Party Members Committee has asked to run a similar event in 2013. We very much hope you will support us!
Yay, at last, a fun filled night of Arty Party magic !

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Arty Party Sponsored Swim on Sunday 21st August. A team of 14 members and staff volunteered to take the challenge of swimming 2 miles in one hour at Madeley Court Swimming Pool. That’s 164 lengths of the pool. With Ricky Owens acting as official starter some of the strongest swimmers went first and the target hit within 25 minutes ! The team went on to swim 478 lengths in total by the end of the hour. Vicki Addison and Becky Smith both swam over one mile each so well done to them. Many thanks to the Lap Counters who made sure every length swam was recorded and a huge ‘thank you’ to the swimming team for their fantastic efforts. We will let everyone know how much money was raised shortly.
The next social night will be held on Friday 30th April,
7.00pm – 9pm at Care Ironbridge. The address is Forbes Close, Ironbridge (close to Abraham Darby School).
Pick up’s by bus 6.30 pm.
The theme is anything American. Ideas for dressing up so far include; Cowboys, Indians, The Simpsons, The Staue of Liberty, American Cops, A Hamburger , and anything with Stars and Stripes. There will be a disco and games, there will be a raffle, refreshments but sadly no alchohol. Please bring money to spend.
An award-winning local arts organisation, Arty Party, is premiering its new short film this week. The ten minute film called ‘Let Me In’ is a collaboration between participants on Arty Party’s Work and Play project and Shropshire-based professional animator Neil Webber. The free public screening is taking place at 7pm on Thursday 11th March in the theatre at Hadley Learning Centre, Crescent Road in Hadley. Drinks and refreshments will be laid on followed by a social reception.
Chairperson Julia Dean-Richards said: “This heralds a very exciting time for Arty Party as it becomes a lot more outward-facing in the distribution of its work. We hope the release of the film and the creation of the website are just the beginning of a new higher profile for the organisation and the inspiring work it does”.
‘Let Me In’ and the new website was commissioned by the Work and Play project which is funded by the Reaching Communities Fund of the Big Lottery. This is the first opportunity to see the new film before it tours national festivals in 2010. Arty Party’s Performance Group previously won the Best Film award for ‘I Saw a Girl’ at the Oska Bright Film Festival in 2007.
